Yesterday, I presented to a group of 80 high-schoolers at Shad Canada's University of Calgary cohort.

I told the story of my immigrant parents, all the sacrifices they made for me, and the experience of working in our grocery store as kid. While I used to be embarrassed to talk about the family business, I now wear it as a badge of honour.

One of the Shad's told me that he also works in his mom's grocery store. Another cleans houses (reminding me of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's story about how he used to clean toilets in one of his past jobs).

Here's why this matters:

- Most of the groups I speak to are 50%+ visible minorities

- We need to demonstrate that It doesn't matter if your parents aren't rich and connected.

- There are employers that value drive and family values more than grades.
